Starting nursery can be fun but yet anxious and stressful which is why the nursery will organize settling in periods for each new child. The settling in periods are times when children can get to know their teachers, new friends and surroundings on a one to one basis. It also offers opportunities for parents to share information with teachers about their child and things that the nursery can put in place to help the child become settled and more relaxed.
The teacher will also sit with parents to fill out a care plan for their child. The care plan includes information on the child’s routine, comfort items, nappy/toileting times as well as recording allergies and any concerns that the parent may have. The settling in period will start with the child attending nursery for 1 or 2 hours then increase as the child becomes more familiar with the nursery environment. The length of time that a child attends for the settling period can differ according to the child as some child find transitions easier than others especially if they have attended a nursery environment before.
